About the Role

At GTR, our people keep Britain moving. As a Roster Development Assistant Manager, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring our traincrew rosters are safe, compliant, efficient and fit for the future. Working closely with operational leaders, planners and trade union representatives, you’ll help deliver robust base rosters that meet business needs while supporting the wellbeing of our colleagues.

This is a highly collaborative role for someone with strong rostering expertise, a keen eye for detail and the confidence to influence across multiple teams. You’ll also support the ongoing development of GTR’s linking strategy and be a key technical expert in traincrew rostering systems.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Producing effective, efficient and compliant rosters to agreed timescales, ensuring staffing levels meet operational requirements
  • Delivering error-free base rosters, achieving zero non-compliances against business change orders related to roster errors
  • Building strong working relationships with Driver, Conductor and OBS management teams, Train Planning and Trade Union representatives
  • Providing coaching, training and competence support on base roster creation and rostering systems where required
  • Reviewing ways of working to identify efficiency, performance and quality improvements across systems, processes and people
  • Ensuring roster rules are agreed, embedded and adhered to, protecting safe and reliable operational delivery
  • Supporting the development and implementation of GTR’s linking strategy
  • Acting as a subject matter expert in traincrew rostering systems and principles
  • Developing and delivering standardised reporting to measure base roster efficiency and performance
  • Deputising for the Roster Development Manager when required

What You’ll Bring

Knowledge & Expertise

  • In-depth knowledge of the rules, regulations and standards affecting employee utilisation
  • Strong understanding of traincrew terms and conditions
  • Proven expertise in base roster creation and production principles

Skills & Behaviours

  • Strong IT skills, including rail rostering/resource optimisation systems, and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Clear and confident communicator, able to influence and build credibility at all levels
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to extract, interpret and compare data from multiple systems
  • Innovative, motivated and flexible, with a drive to continuously improve

Experience

  • Experience working to tight deadlines in a pressurised environment while maintaining accuracy and sound decision-making
  • Proven experience of consultation and negotiation with Trade Union representatives
