Location: Lewisham ECR

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: £53788 + Location Allowance

Join the Southern Region – where your work truly matters. Covering Wessex, Sussex, and Kent, the Southern Region is one of the busiest and most dynamic parts of the railway. Our teams keep some of the UK’s most vital passenger and freight routes moving every single day. This is a place where collaboration, innovation, and resilience are key—and where your contribution will directly impact millions of journeys. We are entering an exciting new chapter as we integrate with train operating companies under one national leadership, creating even greater opportunities to shape the future of rail. From supporting major modernisation programmes to improving performance for local communities and enhancing safety across complex operational environments, Southern offers a fast-paced, rewarding environment to grow your career and make a real difference.

Be the First to Act, Keep Britain Moving!

This is a safety-critical role, which means you’ll need to pass a medical assessment and be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Your role will involve working days, nights and weekends, so flexibility is necessary.

When something goes wrong on the railway, you’ll be the one who makes it right. As a Mobile Operations Manager (MOM), you’ll deliver a fast, effective response to real-time incidents and keep the network safe and operational. From accidents and infrastructure issues to weather-related challenges, you’ll be the person on the ground making a real difference. You’ll also play a vital role in investigations—helping us learn from incidents and prevent them in the future. And if needed, you’ll step up as a Rail Incident Officer, leading the command structure and coordinating service restoration. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where no two days are the same.

What You’ll Do

  • Respond fast: Attend incidents and accidents, ensuring safety and restoring services quickly.
  • Lead when needed: Act as Rail Incident Officer, taking charge of command and coordination.
  • Investigate and improve: Gather evidence, report findings, and help prevent future issues.
  • Stay proactive: Monitor performance, prioritise during severe weather, and support operational audits.
  • Keep things moving: Manage vehicles, stores, and equipment to ensure readiness.
  • Grow your skills: Benefit from one-to-one mentoring and a clear career development path.

What We’re Looking For

If you’re calm under pressure, decisive, and ready to take the lead, we’d love to hear from you.

  • Rail Incident Officer and Personal Track Safety training (or willingness to train).
  • Ability to learn and apply rules and regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills—verbal and written.
  • Strong decision-making and organisational skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Self-motivated and confident.

Bonus points if you have:

  • Investigatory skills.
  • IT skills for reporting and analysis.
  • Experience in operational or safety-critical environments.

Why You’ll Love It Here

  • Impact: Your actions keep Britain’s railway safe and moving.
  • Growth: A 7-week training course and ongoing development.
  • Team Spirit: Work alongside dedicated professionals who care about making a difference.

Closing date: 28th April 2026

We’re dedicated to creating an inclusive environment and we welcome applications from everyone!

All offers of employment are conditional upon satisfactory completion of pre-employment checks.

Keeping people safe on the railway is at the heart of everything we do. Safe behaviour is therefore a requirement of working for Network Rail. You should demonstrate your personal dedication to safety on your application.

Drugs and Alcohol Standard: All prospective candidates will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Your application will be rescinded if you record a positive test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5 year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced.
