Network Rail operates and maintains the railway infrastructure 24/7 365 days a year. Our purpose is to connect people and goods with where they need to be and our vision is for a simpler, better, greener railway.
The North West route is part of the North West and Central region and runs from Cheshire in the south to Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Cumbria in the North, with the two Northern Powerhouse cities of Liverpool and Manchester on the route, as well as the tourist destinations of Blackpool and the Lake District. Major stations across the route include Crewe, Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Victoria and Manchester Piccadilly.
We’re a very busy region, with 1.3 million passengers travelling on our rails every weekday and 700,000 tonnes of freight moved a week. With 571 stations in the North West & Central region, we make up a quarter of Britain’s railway system.
For us, ‘Diversity’ means recognising differences between people while valuing the contribution they make. ‘Inclusion’ means creating safe and welcoming workplaces with fair cultures that encourage innovative and fresh ways of thinking. We value the commitments you may have outside of work and will consider flexible and hybrid working applications. If we can make it work – we will! Please click here for more information.
Brief Description
Are you interested in Signalling & Telecoms? Do you enjoy hands-on problem solving and fixing electrical problems? Do you want to work for a company that gets railway passengers from A to B safely? Then this might be a role for you!
We are looking to recruit for a range of roles within our Signalling & Telecoms team across the Liverpool area. We want to fill Operative, Technician, and Team Leader roles which could be based out of one of our depots located in Liverpool Central, Edge Hill, Crewe, Chester, and Warrington.
As part of the role, you will undertake inspection, faulting, signalling maintenance and telecoms installation. An Operative is the first step in an S&T career but there are progression opportunities into Technician and then Team Leader roles. You will be enrolled on a 6-12 month training programme, which involves classroom and practical hands-on learning experiences. You will also be partnered with an experienced member of staff to help aid your training.
Signalling & Telecoms (S&T) offers a dynamic and diverse role that combines both electrical and mechanical engineering skills. There is a variety of tasks, from using electronic testing equipment to measuring critical electrical parameters, to working with mechanical systems that guide trains. This ensures that no two days are the same. You will be working on tasks such as:
- Electrical measurements: Using advanced testing equipment to check the performance of signalling systems and ensure everything is running safely.
- Mechanical work: Troubleshooting and repairing mechanical components, like the systems that control train directions, adds a hands-on, practical element to the role.
We value individuals with transferable skills, a willingness to learn, and a desire to develop new skills. This includes people who have experience with:
- Basic electrical work (e.g., wiring up new light fittings).
- Mechanical problem-solving (e.g., repairing car engine faults).
- Computerised logic systems (e.g., understanding and troubleshooting automated systems).
Whether you’re new to the field or bringing experience from another technical discipline, there are plenty of opportunities for growth and advancement within Network Rail. Please Note: There may be a requirement to work on call in this role if you opt to take the GTRM IMC25 contract.
