At Caledonian Sleeper, we have an exciting opportunity for a Shunter to join the Operations Team in Edinburgh.
Reporting to the Operations Team Manager, you will support the operations business ensuring its smooth and successful delivery. In this safety critical role as a Shunter, you will be responsible for ensuring the day-day operations that support the safe, continual and efficient provision and operation of the Caledonian Sleeper service, delivering in a safe and secure environment to ensure the safe management of train movements.
You will work as part of an effective team to deliver excellent standard of service and where required, develop immediate solutions to problems encountered within the operation.
We are looking for a team player, with the ability to have a collaborative approach with many stakeholders, whilst able and keen to manage and deliver guest related activities.
Main Accountabilities:
- Responsible for providing an operationally safe and secure environment and prepare, shunt, marshall and dispatch trains in a safe, punctual, and economic manner in accordance with the rules and regulations currently in force.
- Responsible for liaising with Train Managers, signallers, and contractor representatives to ensure customer requirements are met regarding the shunting, marshalling and positioning of trains, while ensuring personal safety and that of others at all times.
- Responsible for ensuring strict adherence with all rules and instructions, and when required carry out emergency procedures.
- Provide detailed reports on shunting issues, operational incidents, train running and performance, and defects/maintenance issues in respect of each journey to Sleeper Control.
- Working as part of an effective team to deliver excellent standard of operational service and where required, (i.e. disruption) develop immediate solutions in a proactive manner to ensure resolution and minimal impact to guests and team members.
- Working with our Infrastructure and Traction partners to provide a punctual train service by ensuring right time departures and keeping delays to a minimum. Liaise as necessary with Signallers, Sleeper Control, Traincrew and Platform staff as well as liaison with operational control to report any service or guest issues.
- Assess the safe condition for travel of all vehicles within each train prior to departure to ensure that the operation will be safe. Along with assessing the mechanical condition of all vehicles and report defects to Sleeper Control.
- Acknowledge receipt of and read all notices (including amendments) affecting your train, route knowledge or rules and instructions, maintaining competency of all personal publications.
- Carry out coupling / uncoupling of rail vehicles to / from the locomotives and or each other as required.
- Communicate proactively and effectively with GB Rail freight control, other staff and customer representatives in the interests of customer service, operational efficiency and safety.
- To attend/ complete all safety briefings/online training and other role related training as required. There may also be requirement to act as a mentor on route and rolling stock training as required.
- Proactively offer feedback on operational standards and procedures to strive for continual improvement.
- Embrace technology, with appropriate training given, using the equipment provided to help support the successful delivery of our Operation and Guest experience.
- Wear and maintain your issued Caledonian Sleeper uniform to the Service Guidelines standards.
- Working closely with the Lead Shunters to ensure that team briefing is completed prior to commencement of activities and that all business briefings sent have been read and understood pre-departure.
- Working with Line Managers to ensure regular My Catch-Up reviews are in place to meet business objectives which will include (but is not limited to),Operational Performance and Overall Guest Satisfaction.
