Join our Health & Safety Team at Network Rail High Speed for a 12-month fixed-term contract as a Safety Health & Environment Specialist.

Network Rail High Speed Ltd. (NRHS) operates and maintains the UK’s only international high-speed railway (HS1), comprising diverse assets like track, signalling, overhead lines, buildings, depots, viaducts, and tunnels. NRHS also manages St. Pancras, Stratford, and Ebbsfleet International stations.

As a subsidiary of Network Rail Infrastructure Ltd, NRHS is privately financed and engages in a range of activities from infrastructure maintenance and operations to station facilities management and retail.

The Role

This exciting opportunity involves reviewing and writing existing and new risk assessments and method statement documents, primarily for track maintenance teams within NRHS. The role requires running working groups with frontline team members, management, and trade union safety representatives. The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of safety legislation and skills in applying safety management system standards and procedures.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide advice and guidance to staff regarding health, safety, environment, and assurance matters.
  • Manage and evaluate documentation requirements for health, safety, and environment in compliance with the Network Rail High Speed Health & Safety Management System and legal requirements.
  • Carry out risk-based inspections of the function’s worksites and locations.
  • Support line managers in compliance with Accident & Investigation processes and assist in evidence collation.
  • Support NRHS teams in undertaking risk assessments and health, safety, and environment monitoring activities.
  • Support the delivery of the NRHS Audit Plan.
  • Provide support to the NRHS SHE and performance teams in collating workforce health, safety, and environment data within corporate management systems.
  • Manage the assessment and development of health, safety, and environment aspects of supplier contract documentation.
  • Evaluate information in health, safety, and environment documentation produced by functional suppliers and advise on applicability and effectiveness.
  • Provide project management for health, safety, and environment OPEX work in accordance with NRHS standards and guidelines.
  • Provide safety support at meetings with contracting organizations on SHE matters to share best practice and lessons learned.

The Person

We are looking for individuals who meet the essential criteria:

  • Must be a member of the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) at Technical (TechIOSH) level or above.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, environment management systems and compliance management processes.
  • Understanding of British environmental legal requirements.
  • Understanding of British Health and Safety legal requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience of railway operations and relevant standards.
  • Good risk assessment skills/knowledge.
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Logical thinker.
  • Internal auditor qualification.
  • Accident Investigator trained.

Desirable skills include:

  • Good IT skills.
  • National Examinations Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Knowledge of contractual processes.
  • Good Project Management skills/knowledge.
