Our Route
The Central route is at the heart of Britain’s railway. The route covers a major part of the national rail network and is a key commuter line in and out of Birmingham, with hundreds of thousands of passengers, and thousands of tonnes of freight carried within our route each week. Within our route is the Chiltern Main Line between London Marylebone and the West Midlands, the Snow Hill line from Stratford-upon-Avon to Worcester, the Cross City line in Birmingham, and lines to other cities including Wolverhampton, Coventry, Walsall, and Oxford. We are home to Birmingham New Street station, the busiest station outside of London with more than 170,000 passengers using it every day.
Brief Description
As a Platform Coordinator at Birmingham New Street Station, you will be responsible for logistically ensuring our Platform Assistants are located and distributed effectively, ensuring they provide safe and efficient train dispatch and that all activities at the station are carried out safely. In addition to this, you will also make sure that all types of stocks are well covered with adequate Platform Assistants and work closely with the Station Coordinator.
About the Role (External)
In addition to the above, you will also be:
- Complying with station dispatch information file and training plan.
- Fulfilling duties of the safe and timely dispatch of trains, meeting in arriving services and hand signalling trains as required.
- Complying with Health and Safety at work act, providing a proactive role in dealing with hazards or unsafe conditions, and checking that all occurrences are reported correctly.
- Maintaining a high level of platform presence providing customer service to all, including visitors, contractors, retailers, TOC’s, and customers travelling throughout the station.
- Complying with core dispatch rules, academy, and other appropriate instructions and standards.
- Maintaining a record of delays, re-platforming, and other events affecting the train plan as required. Reporting delays via the train delay app.
- Fulfilling allocated duties as prescribed within Emergency Plans.
- Ensuring all uniform, name badge, safety shoes, and personal protective equipment is worn as required.
- Correctly allocating all resources across the station, booking staff on and off, directing platform assistants as appropriate.
- Checking all empty coaching stocks going to the depots are secure and free from customers.
- Coaching and mentoring.
- Assisting as directed.

Preferred Qualifications
It’s not mandatory to have the below, but it would be desirable to have:
- Educated to GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths.
- Experience of working in a customer-facing environment.
- Confidence to deal with different types of situations assertively.
- Experience of working effectively as part of a team.
