Brief Description

Route Services is a division of Network Rail that provides the Routes with services so they can help Network Rail deliver a better railway for a better Britain. We support the Routes with a myriad of services and supplies they need to maintain and operate the railway. This role sits within Supply Chain Operations (SCO), an area of the business which supplies and delivers the logistics, materials, components, rail and road fleet that enable the maintenance and renewal of the railway. SCO keeps the materials, machinery and components required by its customers moving – making sure they are on-site when needed so work can go ahead as planned and on schedule.

About the role

Key Accountabilities:

  • Undertake the inspection, repair, modification, maintenance and overhaul of Network Rails, rail plant Fleet in accordance with company policies and statutory regulations.
  • Undertake maintenance activities to the correct specifications as detailed within the vehicle maintenance instructions.
  • Investigate, diagnose and rectify mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical/electronic faults.
  • Capture and record all details of work undertaken as required by the vehicle maintenance instructions on Network Rails Fleet Asset Management system.
  • Carry out good housekeeping practice in working locations, on machine and workshop areas to provide an organised, clean and fit for purpose environment.
  • Carry out all work in accordance with good engineering principles and practices at all times.
  • Confirm all tools, test equipment and all resources necessary are maintained and fit for purpose to meet and deliver the required productive outputs.
  • Propose and introduce initiatives and technical solutions to maintain the rail fleet and its components in the most cost effective and efficient manner.
  • Assist in site/depot maintenance and general enhancements as detailed by supervisor.
  • Work shifts when required by the maintenance manager.
  • Operate Network Rail’s fleet when required by the maintenance manager.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential:

  • Recognised certificated apprenticeship in a mechanical/electrical engineering based discipline.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Appropriate experience in a maintenance-based role.
  • Ability to travel and lodge away from home when required.
  • UK driving licence.
  • Team player.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Network Rail’s Rail Fleet.
  • Trained and competent in forklifts, lifting equipment and overhead cranes.
  • Appropriate experience in similar role within an operational railway environment.
  • Knowledge of Railway Group and Company Standards relating to rail vehicle engineering.
  • Track safety competence – (PTS) Personal Track Safety (DP) Designated Person.

How to apply

Vacancy type: We have three permanent roles available.

Location: 2 x York Holgate Depot and 1 x Homebased (onsite 5 days per week, Mon – Fri). Could involve site work anywhere in the UK.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week on average, with evening and weekend working and overnight stays and travel as and when required.

Salary range: Maintenance terms and conditions – starting from £26,500 pa at trainee level or £45,776 – £48,011 pa dependent on holding relevant, additional competencies.

This role is safety critical and will require a medical and/or Personal Track Safety Competence. Personal Track Safety (PTS) is a set of safety regulations and procedures that individuals must adhere to when working on or near the tracks of the UK rail network.

Drugs and Alcohol Standard: All prospective external candidates offered a conditional role will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Your application will be rescinded if you record a positive test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5 year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced.
