About the Role

We’re looking for an Assistant Signal Sighting Engineer to support the management of SPAD (Signal Passed at Danger) mitigation and signal sighting activities across your allocated area. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your technical expertise while playing a key role in improving railway safety and performance. You’ll work closely with experienced engineers, supporting investigations, inspections, and innovation in signal sighting.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Support the technical investigation of Category A SPADs, helping to convene signal sighting committees, analyse data, and produce reports and recommendations.
  • Assist in specifying and delivering work related to signal sighting and SPAD mitigation, contributing to Network Rail’s safety goals.
  • Help coordinate and support signal sighting committee meetings for major/minor works, CIRAS reports, and TOC/FOC feedback.
  • Plan and carry out signal sighting inspections and assessments, ensuring compliance with Railway Group and company standards.
  • Review standards, identify required changes, and highlight areas of non-compliance or improvement.
  • Produce and check signal sighting documentation and records, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Monitor compliance with competence standards, particularly across projects and minor works activities.
  • Provide technical support and guidance on signal sighting matters.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement in signal sighting practices.

Your Experience and Skills

Essential

  • ONC or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject.
  • Significant relevant experience.
  • Holder of Sentinel Signal Sighting Competency Committee Chair.

Desirable

  • Incorporated Engineer.
  • Signalling Maintenance Testing Handbook qualification.
